The Berezdivin collection possesses a significant repertoire of contemporary works by Puerto Rican artists which focuses on the nineties and the present decade. The nineties, in Puerto Rico, as
in many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, witnessed the increasing participation of local artists in international events. During this decade, the art of the region experienced a shift towards a more globally legible language and focused on themes that, even if they emerge from local issues, are of a more universal character. In this sense, we can perceive a departure from styles and themes that deal with the exotic or the tropics, or the so-called “magical realism” of Latin American art towards more conceptual practices that engage in a reflection on notions of identity, history and memory, which have allowed artists to confront the local realities in order to make them more legible and significant in a global milieu.
This exhibition gathers a selection of works by some of the artists who represent, in diverse ways, the shifts that are shaping contemporary art in Puerto Rico.
